How Satanel Created The World

An unknown Bosnian Bogomil fragment, 12th century

How Did Satanel Create the World?

And sat He, above the firmament
Commanding the angel of the air and the angel of the waters
Two parts of water He lifted into the air
And of the third part He made fifty seas
Thus were the waters divided

Then again He commanded the angel of the waters...
"Stand ye upon two fish!"
Then, lifting a third fish above His head

The Earth remained dry

Taking now the halo of the angel of the air

Illumined and bright

And the halo of the angel of the waters
Shining and glowing
From one half He made the Moon, and from the other, the daylight
From stones he made fire, from fire the heavenly host and stars
From the stars He made angels, his spirits as did the Almighty
He then created thunderbolts, rain, hail and snow

Posting His angels high above them

And the Earth was commanded to bear forth every kind of animal

Every kind of tree and grass

The sea was commanded to issue forth fish, and the sky, the birds

Birds and fish had not yet possessed spirits, nor human souls
The animals of the Earth, together with the birds and the fish

Had to conquer for themselves that which they would possess

And then Satanel decided to create Man

That He might have one to serve Him

He took mud from the Earth and molded Man, in his own image
He commanded the second angel to enter the body of mud
Taking a particle of it, another body was formed, that of Woman
The first angel was commanded to enter this creation
These angels wept now, as they had mortal bodies
Differing in form from one another
Now, Satanel forced them to perform acts of carnal love
With their bodies of clay
Though they knew not they were committing a sin
The Instigator of this transgression Himself arranged all this
So as to deceive them

He planted for them a paradise, a flourishing garden of twenty trees
Walnut, apple, pear, quince and other fruits

The garden was surrounded with a ring of fire

And into this garden He sent...Adam and Eve
